Data centers are the fastest-growing building type in Southeast Asia – and one of the most energy-intensive. Green building certification is becoming the answer, and we are proud to be working on two data center certifications in Thailand right now.

New-build, ~17,000 sqm, Bangkok – TREES Gold (under construction): We support the owner and the EPC contractor from concept design through hand-over: sustainable design charrette, TREES design guideline, energy simulation according to ASHRAE 90.1, daylight and outdoor-air studies, water and stormwater calculations, submittal management with TGBI, construction-phase supervision, material approvals and TREES commissioning of the HVAC, lighting control and electrical systems. Design target: chiller COP > 6.5, full energy and water sub-metering, and a scorecard currently at Gold level.

Five existing data center buildings, ~57,000 sqm, Greater Bangkok – EDGE certification (in operation): Certifying buildings that have run for 1 to 10 years is a different challenge: as-built documentation, 12 months of metered electricity and water data, and PUE (ISO/IEC 30134-2) as the core energy metric. Because the EDGE data center pathway is still a pilot programme, we run the eligibility research and certification strategy directly with IFC/GBCI before the audit – with our in-house EDGE Experts and EDGE Auditors covering the whole process.

We are proud to celebrate the successful EDGE Buildings Certification of Bangkok Marriott Hotels Sukhumvit, a Renovation Project supported by EGS-plan as both EDGE Expert and EDGE Auditor.

Technical Highlights Behind the Savings

⚡ High-Efficiency Chiller Plant
The existing hotel is equipped with 3 centrifugal water-cooled chillers, each achieving a COP of 6.39 at full load, contributing to the project’s energy efficiency and overall energy savings of 37.7%.

💧 Water-Efficient Fixtures

Water savings were achieved through the installation of low-flow aerators, particularly at wash basin faucets. The reduced flow rate helped to cut water consumption by nearly half per fixture compared with the original condition, contributing significantly to the 28.3% water savings achieved under EDGE.

🌍 88% Material Savings – Existing Building Renovation

The project achieved 88.0% material savings (or less embodied carbon) largely because this was an existing building renovation project. By retaining and reusing the existing building structure and major building components rather than constructing a new building from scratch, a significant amount of the embodied carbon associated with new construction was avoided.

Achieving EDGE Certification for an existing hotel undergoing renovation presented unique challenges, requiring close coordination, technical assessment, and careful alignment with EDGE requirements across multiple stakeholders.

Through our EDGE consultancy, technical guidance, coordination, and auditing, EGS-plan helped the project successfully meet its sustainability targets and support the ESG ambitions of Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit and Benchasiri Park Property Co., Ltd.

The EDGE Final Certificate was presented by Dr. Robert Himmler, Managing Director of EGS-plan, to Mr. Aditya Shamsher Malla, Multi-Property General Manager of Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit and Marriott Executive Apartments Bangkok.

Also joining this special milestone were Mr. Umpon Na Sulong, Director of Engineering, and Mr. Apinant Parnsai, Deputy Managing Director of EGS-plan.

EGS-plan was honored to present at the 22nd Renewable Energy Asia Conference (REA 2026), held as part of ASIA Sustainable Energy Week (ASEW 2026) in Bangkok. The conference brought together leading experts from industry, academia, and government to discuss innovative solutions for accelerating the energy transition across ASEAN.

During the Green Building, Sustainable Design & Materials Revolution session, Dr. Robert Himmler, Managing Director of EGS-plan (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., presented the company’s latest research on “Green Hydrogen for Energy Self-Sufficient Buildings.”

The presentation highlighted the results of the feasibility study investigating how solar PV, battery energy storage, and green hydrogen can replace diesel generators in off-grid hotels, resorts, and islands. Using Koh Munnork Private Island Resort as a case study, EGS-plan demonstrated how integrated renewable energy systems can significantly improve energy security while eliminating local emissions, reducing noise pollution, and minimizing the environmental risks associated with diesel fuel transport and storage.

The study has been carried out by EGS-plan in cooperation with GIZ Thailand under the H2Uppp Programme and also evaluates the applicability of the developed concept to similar locations across Southeast Asia.

On 26 June 2026, Mr. Sarut Wanamkang, Head of Engineering at EGS-plan, conducted a technical seminar entitled “ASHRAE Standards for Green Building Consultants”, introducing key ASHRAE standards and their application in high-performance buildings and green building certification systems.

Hosted at the office of our long year certification partner Africus, the seminar provided an overview of the most relevant ASHRAE standards for green building projects, with a particular focus on building commissioning as both a fundamental prerequisite and an effective strategy for achieving additional credits under certification systems such as LEED and TREES.

Key topics covered:

📖 Introduction to ASHRAE standards for green buildings.

📖 Application of ASHRAE 90.1, ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 170, and ASHRAE 55 in sustainable building design.

📖 The role of building commissioning in achieving LEED and TREES certification.

📖 Practical approaches to improving energy efficiency and overall building performance.

Beyond the technical content, the seminar further strengthened the partnership between EGS-plan and Africus, creating valuable opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional development.

We are proud to announce a significant milestone for the SafeBox Bangkok project, a centrally located office building on Banthat Thong Road in Bangkok, which also serves as the office of EGS-Plan. The project has successfully achieved EDGE Advanced Certification.

EGS-Plan acted as the project’s EDGE consultant, providing comprehensive one-stop services as both the EDGE Expert and EDGE Auditor throughout the certification process.

This achievement demonstrates that existing buildings can also pursue EDGE Advanced certification if the project undergoes continuous and strategic development. One of the key highlights of this project is its exceptional 97% Material Saving, attributed to Less Embodied Carbon in Materials. This reflects the project’s strong commitment to minimizing the use of new natural resources through the reuse and optimization of existing materials.

In addition, the project has installed a solar rooftop system with sufficient capacity to support its operational needs, resulting in an impressive 87% Energy Saving under the EDGE criteria. Water efficiency has also been addressed through the installation of water-saving sanitary fixtures, achieving 36% Water Saving.

Furthermore, the project owner has demonstrated strong vision and commitment to sustainability by pursuing an additional certification standard. In addition to EDGE Advanced, the SafeBox Office Bangkok project had previously been awarded Fitwel 1 Star Certification. This accomplishment reflects not only the project’s sustainability performance but also the growing potential for existing buildings to contribute meaningfully to a low-carbon future.

We are proud to announce that PHI SUEA House has successfully achieved  Advanced Certification for an existing building — an important milestone on its journey towards becoming Thailand’s first EDGE Zero Carbon project.

What makes this project truly exceptional is not only its certification, but the innovative energy concept behind it.

Unlike conventional net-zero buildings that remain dependent on the electricity grid, PHI SUEA House demonstrates how a residential development can operate completely off-grid while maintaining a reliable year-round energy supply.

The project’s energy system combines three complementary technologies:
☀️ Photovoltaics generate renewable electricity during the day.
🔋 Battery storage provides short-term energy balancing and covers daily fluctuations.
💧 Hydrogen energy storage acts as seasonal and long-duration storage. Excess solar electricity is used to split water into hydrogen through electrolysis. The hydrogen is safely stored and later converted back into electricity via fuel cells whenever solar generation and battery capacity are insufficient. This unique hybrid concept overcomes one of the biggest challenges of renewable energy systems: providing clean electricity even during extended periods without sunshine.

The installed renewable energy system includes more than 140 kWp of photovoltaic capacity, produces approximately 179 MWh of clean electricity annually, incorporates 192 kWh of lead-acid battery storage, and features a hydrogen storage system capable of supplying approximately 600 kWh of electrical energy via fuel cells. Together, these technologies enable the site to operate independently from the public grid while avoiding operational greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond operational performance, PHI SUEA House also achieved 100% embodied carbon savings under the EDGE methodology by utilizing environmentally responsible construction materials and sustainable design strategies. Combined with 100% operational energy savings, these achievements resulted in the successful award of EDGE Advanced Certification.

As Thailand’s first EDGE Preferred Service Provider, EGS-plan was honored to support the project as both EDGE Expert and EDGE Auditor throughout the certification process.

EGS-plan attended the Thai-German Conference Climate Talks hosted by the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce (GTCC) / AHK Thailand on Monday, 18 May, at Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort Bangkok.

Throughout the event, distinguished speakers and industry leaders exchanged perspectives and explored practical strategies to address today’s climate challenges — ranging from increasingly severe natural disasters to the global impacts of geopolitical instability and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

EGS-plan (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. was honored to host an exhibition booth at the event, where the team connected with numerous organizations and institutions interested in sustainable development and green building solutions. This included universities and international organizations currently planning Green Building projects in Thailand.

In particular, there was growing interest in the EDGE Buildings Certification , which is increasingly becoming one of the leading Green Building standards for projects pursuing Sustainable Finance, Soft Loans, and Green Loans from financial institutions.

We are thrilled to share a milestone in sustainable luxury. On January 27, Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI in Southeast Asia) officially awarded the EDGE Buildings certification (advanced) to the Dior Gold House, located in the heart of Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road.

This recognition marks a significant step forward in Dior’s commitment to environmental excellence, demonstrating that high fashion and high-performance sustainability can go hand in hand.

The Dior Gold House in Bangkok is much more than a retail space; it is a global concept store that represents the intersection of French haute couture and traditional Thai craftsmanship.

Compared to the local Thai building baseline, the Dior Gold House project achieved outstanding resource savings:

On 23 December, Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), presided over the opening of the academic conference “Driving the Green University Policy Toward a Sustainable University.” The conference brought together leading experts, university administrators, and representatives from both public and private higher education institutions nationwide.

As part of the conference program, Mr. Apinant Parnsai, Deputy Managing Director of EGS-plan (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., was invited as a speaker to share EGS-plan’s experience with the green building consulting of the new extension building of the RIS Swiss Section – Deutschsprachige Schule Bangkok School. The project is currently pursuing a DGNB Gold Certification, with EGS-plan serving as the project’s sustainability consultant. The DGNB system is provided by the DGNB German Sustainable Building Council and is one of the most advanced green building certification systems which holistically considers the environmental, economic, and human quality of buildings. EGS-plan has supported the project through integrated energy concept development, building performance simulations, and commissioning management, as well as Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) enhancement to create optimal learning conditions for students and teachers. This project demonstrates how high-performance building design can positively impact learning environments while delivering measurable sustainability outcomes.

The RIS Swiss Section – Deutschsprachige Schule Bangkok project is widely recognized as a strong benchmark for future Green University and sustainable education developments in Thailand, reinforcing EGS-plan’s commitment to advancing sustainable, healthy, and future-ready campuses.

The Tara Office and Educational Building, developed by CP ALL Public Company Limited, is located on Chaengwattana Road in Nonthaburi Province. It comprises 22 floors above ground with a total gross floor area of over 43,045 sqm. The project was designed and constructed in accordance with the TREES green building standard, integrating a wide range of systems that enhance energy efficiency and promote occupant well-being.

The building incorporates high-performance systems designed for functionality, cost efficiency, and long-term maintainability, with all equipment meeting both local and international standards. Key features include a highly efficient central chiller plant and district cooling system, CO₂ sensors for indoor air quality control, and MERV 7 air filters. The electrical system complies with ASHRAE 90.1-2010 requirements and includes daylight controls in perimeter areas. Water-efficient fixtures, an on-site wastewater treatment system, and dedicated water sub-metering are also provided. A centralized Building Management System (BMS) monitors and optimizes all MEP operations.

EGS-plan (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., acting as the Commissioning Authority, played a key role as required by TREES and contributed significantly to the successful achievement of the Gold level awarded by the Thai Green Building Institute (TGBI).
